I recall a couple of months ago when they had the South Carolina GOP primaries and Ron Paul only got like 7% of the vote. I don’t buy that for a minute. When they? were having the Town Halls a few years back that Lindsay Graham was attending the people in the crowd were booing Graham out of the building while chanting Ron Paul and Graham was pissing his pants replying “This is not the party of Ron Paul!”. I feel that $ 900 per month is not a “rational” answer. This really depends on a few things:

1) What state will you be in when you retire?

2) Do you have any medical conditions?

3) What is your risk tolerance? i.e. How much of a deductible can you handle?

With the above being said, it is very difficult to just throw a number at you – there are just too many variables.

Minimum per person $ 300
Maximum per person $ 800

You should also look at getting into a Health Savings Account qualified plan – they keep the premium’s reasonable for that age group, plus they give you the ability to open a tax advantaged savings account.

That means he has $ 96.50 per month taken out of his Social Security check as a premium and he must pay 20 percent of all charges. Medicare pays about 80 percent. If he is very low income he might also be on Medicaid at the county level. Call the main social security office and ask about him. Explain the situation. You can look up the Medicare and Medicaid website and get the Medicare 2010 book. When a person gets Medicare in the beginning, they sign up for one of the health plans at that time, so you have to find out from Social Security what your Granddad has.

If you require dialysis, you will not be permitted to cruise unless you have a self-contained, self-operated unit. You will need to sign documents holding harmless the cruise line and staff. If difficulties arise, you will be levied heavily for any emergency activities required and possibly abandoned in some foreign port.

Before you even worry about this there is the problem as to whether a cruise ship can even perform dialysis as it would not be the normal equipment carried in their medical centre. Your first step would be to confirm whether it is even possible for you to have this done while on board a ship.

If you can find a cruise line that can perform it then you should contact Medicare and confirm with them whether it would be covered. Make sure you get any answer, especially if it is yes, in writing just in case.

So I wasn’t sure if medicare covered your situation and did a quick google search. I found some information on this website, it’s on the 3rd page http://www.medicare.gov/publications/pubs/pdf/11037.pdf

This document gives you an over view of what Medicare covers overseas or on the cruise. I know how important Medicare is as my mother has this for her primary and only insurance. With her being disabled and needing doctors care on a weekly basis.

The other thing I highly suggest, is for you to contact the 800 number of medicare. Look on the back of your card- it should be provided.

Good luck on the cruise. Sounds like a lot of fun.

A bigger problem concerning dialysis is can you even go on a cruise? The doctors on board will not do dialysis as they are not set up for that. So unless you have some sort of dialysis that you can do on your own. then you can’t go on a cruise. So sorry.

Well, it could be really important. How much is it per month? You need to read the policy, and find out if it has a maximum out of pocket. Medicare will always, ONLY, pay 80%.

If you have a supplement that pays the same way medicare does, there is probably an out of pocket maximum threshold. Once you know that dollar amount, divide it by 12 mos. Most likely, it will be less than $ 200.00… Now add your monthly premium. How much, on average, per month are you expected to spend?

This means…. Once you pay the dollar amount specified as the ‘out of pocket max’, the secondary plan will pay everything @ 100% for the rest of the year. I know it seems tedious, but, the plan is probably pretty good.

And, while its true you can pay from $ 250.00 – $ 450.00 per month on a medi-gap supplement, why would you; if the amount you pay per year is less on the plan you already have.

The definition of a Med Supp is that it picks up the balance of what Medicare doesn’t pay. Medicare leaves 20% and that is what the Supplement pays.
If your Medicare 20% adds up to more than what supplemental coverage would cost (and it usually does), then it is a good deal for you.

The basic difference between single payer and Medicare is that Medicare is an umbrella plan which is a subsidy by the government to seniors and disabled to buy a private insurance plan that contracts with Medicare for certain services. Single payer refers to government delivery of health care such as the VA.
